This is a tutorial to show a way in PS(Photoshop) to get your colors to pop. A lot of people use curves and/or levels to correct colors, and I suggest you do that still, but this will get you a good result on pretty much any image you have, so give it a try and see if you like it. I am doing this in PS CS3, and I know you can do it in CS2, but I have never used PSE(Photoshop Elements), so I'm not sure if you have the same blending modes, you may need to find another one if soft light doesn't exist to get this to work.

First load your image into PS.

Popping Colors Initial

Next create a duplicate layer by hitting ctrl-j. This will create a layer called layer1 that is exactly the same as your original layer.

Popping Colors Layer

Now that you have your new layer lets change the blending mode. Photoshop has a variety of different blending modes that give you different looks, the default and what our image is set to right now is normal, but we're going to switch it to Soft Light.

Popping Colors Blend

Now that we have changed our blending mode you should see the colors are now more saturated and just stick out more. I usually don't leave it at this point, I like to adjust the opacity. The opacity basically determines how much of that layer is actually blended, right now it is at 100%, so we are getting a complete blend. Lowering the opacity will basically just lower the amount that the affect has on the overall image. So just adjust the opacity to the point where you think it looks good.

Popping Colors Opacity

Thats it, you're done. Just save your new file and you're ready to go. If you are going to post to the web just resize and do any sharpening, if you normally sharpen, that you would do and save it and you can upload your shot. Here is what we started with and what it turned into, I left the opacity at 100% so you can see the difference in the two easily.

I hope you like this simple way to get your colors to stand out.

Just to let folks know, the steps will apply in PSE at least 5. Don't know about PSE6 since I don't have that.

Nice tutorial, I like it. That was done MUCH better than I would have. I would have just written it all out in words. Nicely done.
