March 24th, 2008 Weekly Challenge - Long Exposure

Post by travis_cooper on Mon Mar 24, 2008 10:35 am

Okay, here is your next challenge. I have debated over this one for a few weeks now because I'm worried that we may not get a lot of participation on this one. Hopefully people will be willing to step outside the box and try something new, because I think a lot of you rarely, if ever, shoot shots like this. The challenge is a long exposure. In order to help out the non-tripod crowd I will define a long exposure as anything that has a shutter speed of 1", 1 second, or longer. This should allow the people without tripods to find a rock, or a railing, or something to put their cameras on, or even if they are really, really, steady, possibly they could hand hold it. Hopefully we will see a lot of fun and interesting shots for this challenge, and we'll get a lot of participation. So lets see those star trails, nighttime cityscapes, and nice flowing silky rivers and streams. As usual you can see the challenge rules here. Also if you are having problems uploading your picture for the challenge please see this tutorial.

How exactly do I get a slow shutter speed? What settings do I need to change?

The easiest way is to shoot in Tv mode. Time to step out of those auto modes and learn to shoot manual. If you go to Tv mode and roll your little wheel, on the top right of your camera, until you see the 1" on your top LCD, that is for 1 second. The one thing to watch out for is if you have too much light you will just get a white image back. One way to know this is if your f-stop number is flashing, if it is that means you can't get the proper exposure. So with your lens at 1" zoomed all the way out, if in the view finder you see a 22, or I think 38 that lens can go up to, flashing that means the lens has closed down all the way and still too much light will get in in 1 second.

You should really read up on the tutorial posts I have written in the forum, you can see the index of the tutorials here.
